LongIslandLighthouses.com's Founder Receives National Lighthouse Preservation Award

On Friday, May 13, LongIslandLighthouses.com's founder, Bob Muller, received the 2005 US Lighthouse Society President's Award. This prestigious award is given each year to someone in the US for "outstanding contribution[s] to lighthouse preservation and support of the U.S. Lighthouse Society."

In presenting the award, U.S. Lighthouse Society Wayne Wheeler cited Bob's book, Long Island's Lighthouse: Past and Present (which Wayne has called "a major work"), his leadership as founding president of the Long Island Chapter of the US Lighthouse Society (2000-2004), and his work toward preserving the Cedar Island Lighthouse.

The award was given at the Islandia Marriott on the eve of the inaugural Long Island Lighthouse Challenge, an event that involved all of Long Island's lighthouse groups, as well as several government and commercial entities. Bob served as the event's coordinator.

Wayne Wheeler also presented current Long Island Chapter president Carol House with a $5000 check to be used in the continuing efforts to preserve the Cedar Island Lighthouse in East Hampton.

In addition, Wayne mentioned the contributions of several key Long Island Chapter members: Diane Mancini for her work on the Long Island Light Keeper newsletter, Chatt Chapman for his work on the Lighthouse Challenge, Silke Griemsmann for her efforts for the Cedar Island Light, and Carol House for her efforts for the Plum Island Light.
