Driving Directions - Challenge Sites - Recommended Starting Points -- Notes on Traveling on Long Island

Driving Directions (Map and Grid Numbers refer to Hagstrom's Suffolk County map; ISBN 0880977299)

There are two general routes that participants will travel: Counterclockwise (marked A), and Clockwise (marked B). Either route can begin at any point. Recommended starting points are below.

To Fire Island Map 18, Grid X-3. (Park at W-3)

From Southern Parkway: Exit 40 South (Robert Moses Causeway). Follow signs to Robert Moses State Park (approximately 10 miles), park in Field 5, follow boardwalk to lighthouse.

From Route 27: Exit 41 South (Robert Moses Causeway). Follow signs to Robert Moses State Park (approximately 10 miles), park in Field 5, follow boardwalk to lighthouse.

From 495: Exit 53 South (Sagtikos Parkway), follow south to Robert Moses Causeway (Sagtikos merges into Southern Parkway, then take Exit 40 South). Follow signs to Robert Moses State Park (approximately 10 miles), park in Field 5, follow boardwalk to lighthouse.

A From Huntington Harbor: Exit Gold Star Battalion Beach and turn left. Follow West Shore Road/Wall Street to Route 25A, then turn left. Follow 25A east one block, then turn right onto Route 110 South. Follow to 495 East. Follow 495 to Exit 53 South (Sagtikos Parkway), follow south to Robert Moses Causeway (Sagtikos merges into Southern Parkway, then take Exit 40 South). Follow signs to Robert Moses State Park (approximately 10 miles), park in Field 5, follow boardwalk to lighthouse.

B From Montauk Point (2 hours): Exit Parking Field, follow Route 27 west approximately 85 miles to Exit 41 South (Robert Moses Causeway). Follow signs to Robert Moses State Park (approximately 10 miles), park in Field 5, follow boardwalk to lighthouse.

To Montauk Point Map 62, Grid G5-38.

A From Fire Island: Exit Parking Lot 5 and follow road back to the water tower. Go over the bridge and follow Robert Moses Causeway north to Exit RM1 east. Take Sunrise Highway (Route 27) east until you see the lighthouse. Then park in the state parking lot on your left.

B From Cedar Island: Exit Cedar Point County Park and turn right. Follow to Alewive Brook Road; turn left. Turn right onto Northwest Road. Turn left at Old Northwest Road. Follow to Stephen Hands Path (bear right at fork) and follow to Route 114. Turn left at traffic light. Follow Route 114 into East Hampton and turn left on Route 27. Follow to Montauk Point Light, then park in the state parking lot on your left.

To Cedar Island (Cedar Point County Park) Map 55, Grid Y3-36, (Park at A4-36)

A From Montauk Point: Exit the parking lot. Follow Route 27 into East Hampton, to Route 114 North (approx 20 miles). Take 114 north approx 2 miles to Stephen Hands Path. Turn right at that light. Follow the signs as follows: Stephen Hands Path 2 1/2 miles to Northwest Road (turn right). Then go 1.8 miles, and turn left at Alewive Brook Road. Then go .1 mile and turn right at Cedar Point Road. Then .2 miles and turn left into the park. Follow the road 1 mile to the visitor parking area (please observe the 15mph speed limit in the park).

B From East End Seaport (via Shelter Island Ferry): Exit parking lot and get into the line for the ferry ($10 fee). On Shelter Island, follow Route 114 to ferry on south side of the island (another $10 fee). Exit south ferry and follow Route 114 south. At traffic circle, continue following Route 114 south. Go over the bridge through Sag Harbor and continue following Route 114 to Stephen Hands Path. Make a left at traffic light. Follow the signs as follows: Stephen Hands Path 2 1/2 miles to Northwest Road (turn right). Then go 1.8 miles, and turn left at Alewive Brook Road. Then go .1 mile and turn right at Cedar Point Road. Then .2 miles and turn left into the park. Follow the road 1 mile to the visitor parking area (please observe the 15mph speed limit in the park).

B From East End Seaport (driving through Riverhead): Exit parking lot and follow 3rd Street north to the first traffic light. Turn left onto Route 25. Follow Route 25 west to Route 105. Turn left at Route 105 and follow south to Route 24. Turn left onto Route 24 and follow to Route 27 (Sunrise Highway). Follow Route 27 into East Hampton, to Stephen Hands Path (the first left after East Hampton Airport; there is a sign that says Cedar Point). Follow the signs as follows: Stephen Hands Path across Route 114 then 2.5 miles to Northwest Road (turn right). Then go 1.8 miles, and turn left at Alewive Brook Road. Then go .1 mile and turn right at Cedar Point Road. Then .2 miles and turn left into the park. Follow the road 1 mile to the visitor parking area (please observe the 15mph speed limit in the park).

To East End Seaport Museum Map 50, Grid Q3-40. (The Greenport ferry dock location is wrong on this map)

A From Cedar Island (via Shelter Island Ferry): Exit the park, turn right. Go .2 miles and turn left on Alewive Brook Road. Go .1 miles and turn right on Northwest Rd. Go 2.2 miles and turn left at Old Northwest Rd. Bear right at 1.7 miles and continue on Old Northwest Road. Turn right at the traffic light (Route 114). Drive 4.9 miles into Sag Harbor and make a left (follow Route 114 sign). Go past the windmill, over the bridge and to the traffic circle. Follow Route 114 north 2 miles to the south Shelter Island ferry ($10 fee). Cross over to Shelter Island, then follow Route 114 across Shelter Island to the North ferry (another $10 fee). When you exit the ferry, the museum is on your left. Park in the dirt/gravel lot by the train station.

A From Cedar Island (driving through Riverhead): Exit the park, turn right. Go .2 miles and turn left on Alewive Brook Rd. Go .1 miles and turn right on Northwest Rd. Go 2.2 miles and turn left at Old Northwest Rd. Bear right at 1.7 miles and continue on Old Northwest Road, which becomes Stephen Hands Path. Follow Stephen Hands Path south until it ends at Route 27. Turn right. Follow Route 27 (Montauk Highway/Sunrise Highway) to Route 24. Follow Route 24 northwest to Route 105. Turn right. Follow Route 105 to Route 25. Turn right. Follow Route 25 into Greenport. Turn right at 3rd Street. Museum is at the end of 3rd Street. Park in the dirt/gravel lot by the train station.

B From Long Beach Bar: Follow Route 25A west 2.6 miles and turn left at flashing light. Go .9 miles south and follow Route 25 by turning right onto Front Street. Go .2 miles and turn left at 3rd Street. Museum is at the end of 3rd Street. Park in the dirt/gravel lot by the train station.

To Long Beach Bar Map 50, Grid V3-41. (Park at U3-43)

A From East End Seaport: Exit the parking lot the way you entered it (watch out for ferry traffic). Follow 3rd St to the traffic light and turn right onto Route 25 east. Go to the end of the road (.2 miles) and turn left (follow Route 25). When you reach the flashing traffic light (.9 miles), turn right. Go 2.6 miles, and pull over to the right side of the road (by the rock with the plaque on it). The back of the offshore Long Beach Bar Light can be seen from here (it is best seen with binoculars).

B From Horton Point: Exit parking lot and turn left on Soundview Avenue Extension. Follow to Soundview Avenue and take it east to Route 48/Truck Route 25. Turn left. After 3.3 miles, Route 48 joins Route 25. Continue straight at this light for another 2.6 miles. Pull over to the right side of the road (by the rock with the plaque on it). The back of the offshore Long Beach Bar Light can be seen from here (it is best seen with binoculars).

From Orient Point/Plum Island: Follow Route 25 west for 5.5 miles. Pull over to the right side of the road. The back of the offshore Long Beach Bar Light can be seen from here (it is best seen with binoculars). For safety reasons, please do not cross the roadway at this point.

To Orient Point/Plum Island (Orient Beach State Park) Map 49, Grids B4-46 & D4-46. (Park at A4-45)

A/B From Long Beach Bar: Get back on Route 25 east (watch for traffic). Follow to Orient Point County Park. The park is on the left, across from the entrance to the Cross Island Ferry. Park your car in the small lot on the left, or along the road. Please watch for traffic. Orient Point and Plum Island lighthouses may be viewed by following the trail that leads north from the parking lot.

A/B (If you start Challenge from Cross Sound Ferry) From Orient Point/New London Ferry: As you exit ferry parking lot, drive across street into dirt/gravel parking lot to get the souvenir.

To Horton Point Map 44, Grid K3-39

A From Orient Point/Plum Island: Drive west on Route 25, past the Long Beach Bar Light, past the flashing traffic light, and continue along Route 48/Truck 25, past the Soundview Inn, past the town beach, then bear right at Soundview Avenue (12.5 miles from Orient Point County Park - There is a sign that says "Horton Point Lighthouse"). Follow Soundview Avenue to Soundview Avenue Extension - bear right. Drive to Lighthouse Road - turn right. The lighthouse's parking lot will be on your left.

B From Old Field Point: Exit Old Field Farm and turn right. Follow West Meadow Road, turn right on Mount Grey Road and follow to Quaker Path. Take Quaker Path south to Route 25A and make a left at the light. Follow 25A east. Follow 25A into Port Jefferson and turn right at flashing light. Travel south and turn left onto Route 347. Follow 347 east (it becomes Route 25A). In Rocky Point, turn right onto Route 25A Bypass. Continue east 4.5 miles. Turn left at light after the Valero gas station (Sound Avenue). Sound Avenue becomes Route 48. Road will divide for 8.1 miles. Turn left on Youngs Avenue (.9 miles after road is no longer divided). At end of Youngs Avenue, turn right, then a quick left onto Lighthouse Road. Follow to end, lighthouse is on the left.

To Old Field Point (Old Field Farm) Map 19, Grid F1-31. (Park at D1-28)

A From Horton Point: Exit Horton Point's parking lot. Follow Lighthouse Road. Turn right at at Old North Road. Make the first left, at Youngs Avenue. Make the first right, onto Route 48. Follow Route 48/Truck 25 west. Road becomes a divided highway for 8 miles, then becomes Sound Avenue (Route 48). Continue on Sound Avenue west to Route 25A, turn right at traffic light (25.5 miles from Horton Point Lighthouse). Take 25A west (use 25A Bypass from Shoreham to Rocky Point). Fuel and food become more abundant at about this point. Where 25A meets Route 347 bear right onto Hallock Avenue. Follow Hallock Avenue to its end (there is a Mobil gas station on the right). Turn right. Follow 25A through Port Jefferson to the flashing yellow light. Turn left. Continue following 25A west to Stony Brook. Make a right at Quaker Path (opposite Stony Brook train station). Follow Quaker Path to West Meadow Road. Turn left. Follow to Old Field Farm. From here you will take a bus to the lighthouse.

B From Eaton's Neck: Exit Asharoken Beach and turn right. Follow Eaton's Neck Road .8 miles. Turn right on Ocean Avenue. Follow Ocean Avenue south. Ocean Avenue becomes Church Street, then Reservoir Avenue. Follow Reservoir Avenue to Route 25A and turn left at the light. Follow Route 25A east through Northport, Fort Salonga, past Sunken Meadow Parkway, Kings Park and into Smithtown. Route 25A joins Route 25 for 1.4 miles. Turn left onto Route 25A. Follow through St. James and Head of the Harbor. Route 25A turns right at Long Island Museum of American Art History and Carriages. Follow 25A up the hill for 1.1 miles and turn left onto Quaker Path at 2nd traffic light (opposite Stony Brook train station).  Follow Quaker Path to West Meadow Road. Turn left. Follow to Old Field Farm. From here you will take a bus to the lighthouse.

From 495: Take Exit 62 north (Route 97/Nicolls Road). Follow Nicolls Road to the end. Turn left at the light. Follow 25A west to Stony Brook. Make a right at Quaker Path (opposite Stony Brook train station). Follow Quaker Path to West Meadow Road. Turn left. Follow to Old Field Farm. From here you will take a bus to the lighthouse.

To Eaton's Neck (Asharoken Beach) Map 1, Grid J-29. (Park at Map 7; Grid M-26)

A From Old Field Point: Exit Old Field Farm by turning right. Follow West Meadow Road, turn right on Mount Grey Road and follow to Quaker Path. Take Quaker Path south to Route 25A and make a right at the light. Follow 25A west. Turn left at the light at the bottom of the hill. After 5 miles, Routes 25 and 25A merge for 1.4 miles. Where 25 and 25A split (at the Bull), bear right and follow 25A north for 2 more miles. Turn left at East Main Street/Route 25A and follow through Kings Park and Fort Salonga into Northport. Turn right at Reservoir Avenue. Reservoir Avenue becomes Church Street, then Ocean Avenue. Follow Ocean Avenue north until it ends. Turn left at Eaton's Neck Road. Follow .8 miles to Asharoken Beach. From here you will take a bus to the lighthouse.

B From Huntington Harbor: Exit Gold Star Battalion Beach and turn left. Follow West Shore Road/Wall Street to Route 25A, then turn left. Follow 25A east through Huntington and Centerport. Turn left at the light onto Reservoir Avenue (south of Route 25A, Reservoir Avenue is called Elwood Avenue).  Reservoir Avenue becomes Church Street, then Ocean Avenue. Follow Ocean Avenue north until it ends. Turn left at Eaton's Neck Road. Follow .8 miles to Asharoken Beach. From here you will take a bus to the lighthouse.

To Huntington Harbor (Gold Star Battalion Beach) Map 1, F-25. (The dock is on map 2; F-24, marked "Park")

A From Eaton's Neck: Exit Asharoken Beach and turn right. Follow Eaton's Neck Road .8 miles. Turn right on Ocean Avenue. Follow Ocean Avenue south. Ocean Avenue becomes Church Street, then Reservoir Avenue. Follow Reservoir Avenue to Route 25A and turn right at the light. Follow 25A west into Huntington. Make first right after Route 110 (Wall Street). Follow Wall Street north (it becomes West Shore Road) along the harbor to Gold Star Battalion Beach. Turn right into the parking lot. Dock is at end of parking lot on right (Coney's Marine Gold Star Mooring and Launch). From here you will take a boat to the lighthouse.

B From Fire Island: Exit Parking Lot 5 and follow road back to the water tower. Go over the bridge and follow Robert Moses Causeway north to Sagtikos Parkway (where Robert Moses Causeway, Southern Parkway and Sagtikos Parkway meet, cautiously move to left two lanes). Continue north to Route 495 (LI Expressway), take 495 west to Exit 49 north (Route 110). Follow Route 110 into Huntington. Turn left onto Route 25A west, then make the first right and follow Wall Street north (it becomes West Shore Road) along the harbor to Gold Star Battalion Beach. Turn right into the parking lot. Dock is at end of parking lot on right (Coney's Marine Gold Star Mooring and Launch). From here you will take a boat to the lighthouse.

From Route 25A: Take Wall Street (which is one block west of Route 110) north (it becomes West Shore Road) along the harbor to Gold Star Battalion Beach. Turn right into the parking lot. Dock is at end of parking lot on right (Coney's Marine Gold Star Mooring and Launch). From here you will take a boat to the lighthouse.

From 495: Take Exit 49 north (Route 110). Follow Route 110 into Huntington. Turn left onto Route 25A west, then make the first right and follow Wall Street north (it becomes West Shore Road) along the harbor to Gold Star Battalion Beach. Turn right into the parking lot. Dock is at end of parking lot on right (Coney's Marine Gold Star Mooring and Launch). From here you will take a boat to the lighthouse.

 

Special Directions for Cruise Participants (PLEASE NOTE: ARRANGEMENTS FOR 2006 CRUISES HAVE NOT YET BEEN MADE. CHECK BACK IN LATE-JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2006)
(NOTE: On the cruise, you will see Long Beach Bar, Cedar Island, Orient Point and Plum Island and get your souvenir coins for these on the boat. The boat departs from the dock adjacent to the East End Seaport Museum. Please be at the Seaport Museum by about 3:30.)
